Summary of the main points of the ACTS Migration: Roundtable meetings held on 10 and 28 November 2007.
- We shared what is being done; what could be done together; is there a role for ACTS?
- Tension between needs of longer term migrant communities and new wave of migrant workers, including when does a ‘migrant community’ become accepted as ‘British’ and integrated in national social, cultural, political scene.
- Roman Catholic Church very active. Spoke of outreach opportunities by: offering services in different languages; chaplaincy; welcome from host communities; advice on accommodation, employment, legal issues; drop in centres; cultural associations; individual tutoring in English; help in getting qualifications realized.
- Scottish Churches Rural Group has produced a paper on Migrant Workers ‘Our New Neighbours - A collection of stories around Scotland on the arrival of migrants’.
- Scottish Churches Rural Group has produced brochure on ‘Migrant Workers in Scotland’ with ‘What can churches do?’ section.
- CTBI has produced a booklet on Migration and how churches can respond.
- A working party was agreed to look into the possibility of an ecumenical conference in 2008. Nelu (Racial Justice Officer) to lead.
