The Third Order of the Society of St Francis (TSSF) is an Anglican Order engaging in ‘Church in Society’
The Order is open to men and women, ordained or lay, married or single who feel that God is calling them to live out their Franciscan vocation in the their local communities and in the wider world: to be an ‘instrument of God’s peace’. One of its outstanding characteristics is that the Order is inspired by St Francis and St Clare to compassionate action grounded in contemplative prayer. This means that ‘spiritual activism’ is at the heart of their study, prayer and work:
"The Order sets out, in the name of Christ, to break down barriers between people and to seek equality for all. We accept as our second aim the spreading of a spirit of love and harmony among all people. We are pledged to fight against the ignorance, pride and prejudice that breed injustice or partiality of any kind. We fight against all such injustice in the name of Christ, in whom there can be neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female; for in Him all are one. Our chief object is to reflect that openness to all which was characteristic of Jesus, and are prepared not only to speak out for social justice and international peace, but to put these principles into practice in our own lives..."
The First and Third Orders work together on Justice, Peace and Environmental Campaigns, and have formed a Franciscan Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) Network that can be used as a resource for anyone wishing to engage more fully in JPIC issues within their local community. Please see the JPIC website.
The Third Order offers a life of challenge and support for those who are called to a deeper commitment to Christ, while remaining committed to family responsibilities and engaging in the ordinary tasks of life. There are currently over 2,000 members of the Third Order (called Tertiaries) in the European Province throughout England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Sweden. If you would like to know more, please see the Third Order website.
