Each Bishop in the Scottish Episcopal Church has his own diocese, of which there are seven.
Collectively the Bishops are known as the College of Bishops and constitute the Episcopal Synod of the Church. This Synod elects one of its members as Chair, who has the title of Primus (from the Latin 'primus inter pares' - 'first among equals'). The current Primus is the Most Reverend Dr Idris Jones, Bishop of Glasgow & Galloway, elected in May 2006. The College of Bishops meets regularly (usually six times each year).
The Bishops support the strategic development of all aspects of the church's activity through the Church's four Boards (Faith & Order, Mission & Ministry, Information & Communication, Administration) and some of their pendant committees. The Bishops participate fully in the annual meeting of the General Synod, where they constitute the House of Bishops.
