General Synod 2010 - Saturday 12 June

Posted Saturday 12 June 2010 | 8:51am

Following Morning Prayer lead by Mrs Norma Higgott the business of Synod began with a introduction to the work of the Church in Society Committee - given by the Committee’s Convener, the Very Rev Ian Barcroft who spoke about moving to new ways for church members to interact with the issues that cause concern and debate.  He then introduced Andrew Mott who offered background to Motions 30 & 31 (relating to the preparation of a Statement of Principles in 2010/11) and Richard Murray who introduced an audio visual meditation shown to Synod which focussed on the Greek word ‘Oikos’ from which comes the words’ economy’, ‘ecology’ and ‘ecumenism’ and how they interact in ‘oikumene’ - ‘community’.  A number of Synod members offered their comments before voting on both Motions - which were carried.

This was followed by a presentation from members of the Provincial Youth Network, who spoke about their experiences at the annual Youth Weeks in Glenalmond. The Primus paid tribute to “the supreme value for our church” of the Rt Rev Mark Strange in his work with Provincial Youth Network.

Professor Patricia Peattie, Convener of the Standing Committee explained the processes of calculating budget and Quota and presented the final Motion of General Synod - to agree to a quota figure of £602,929 for the year 2011. This Motion was carried. This completed Professor Peattie’s term as Convener of the Standing Committee and the Primus paid tribute to her significant contributions to the Standing Committee and also to the College of Bishops in seeking clarity about their roles.

The Primus then confirmed the Acts of Synod 2010 and closed the meeting.
