The Board has responsibility for Home and Overseas Mission, for the SEC's involvement Scottish life and politics, and for Ministry Development, which encompasses clergy and lay education at all levels.
The Board works through its pendant committees:
- the Church in Society Committee and its pendant committee, the Committee for Relations with People of Other Faiths
- the Home Mission Committee
- the Ministry Development Committee
- the Overseas Committee
In addition, the Board's Church in Society and Overseas Committee oversee the Justice, Peace and Creation Network, which encourages individuals and groups to work locally to engage in environmental, social, economic and human justice issues that have consequences at the local, national, and global levels.

The Mission and Ministry Board also seeks to work closely with the seven dioceses of the SEC through their representatives on the Board. The Board meets four times a year and is responsible to the General Synod of the SEC.
