First female Dean is to be appointed in Edinburgh Diocese
History is set to be made in the Scottish Episcopal Church when the first female Dean will be appointed in May. The Bishop-Elect of Edinburgh, The Very Rev Dr John Armes intends to appoint The Rev Susan Macdonald as Dean of the Diocese of Edinburgh, following his consecration as Bishop on 12 May in St Mary’s Cathedral, Palmerston Place. Susan Macdonald will be installed as Dean on Sunday 13 May, at a service in the Cathedral.

New Bishop of Brechin installed in special Cathedral ceremony
The Rt Rev Dr Nigel Peyton was consecrated and installed as the Bishop of Brechin in a special service at 2.30pm on Saturday 8 October in the Cathedral Church of St Paul, Dundee.

Five candidates short-listed in vacancy for new Bishop of Brechin
Five candidates have been short-listed for the office of Bishop of Brechin which became vacant in October 2010 following the early retirement of the late Rt Rev Dr John Mantle who had served the Diocese of Brechin since 2005. Dr Mantle died in November 2010. The five candidates have been selected by a Preparatory Committee (chaired by the Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church) consisting of clergy and lay church members who represent the Diocese of Brechin and the wider Church. The next stage in the selection process is a meeting of each of the candidates with members of an Electoral Synod (representatives of clergy and lay church members from the Diocese of Brechin only). That meeting will take place on Saturday 7 May, with the election of the new Bishop taking place on Wednesday 18 May.

New Bishop elected for Argyll and The Isles
The Very Rev Kevin Pearson is the Bishop-elect of Argyll and The Isles. The See became vacant following the retirement last year of the Rt Rev Martin Shaw who had served the diocese as Bishop for five years.

Blessing of Bikes in St Mary’s Cathedral, Glasgow
For the first time in Scotland cyclists will present their bikes for a blessing at St Mary’s Cathedral, Glasgow (300 Great Western Road) at 11am on Saturday 19June. The blessing, which will be given by the Very Rev Kelvin Holdsworth, Provost of St Mary’s Cathedral, Glasgow is part of the Glasgow Cycling Festival and is inspired by the Blessing of the Bikes which has been taking place in New York for the past 12 years.

Episcopal Election - Argyll & The Isles
The Electoral Synod met yesterday (13 May 2010) and adjourned after discussion. The result of this is that the right of election will lapse to the Episcopal Synod, as provided in Canon 4 of the Church's Code of Canons.

A first for Lay Readers in Scotland
60 Lay Readers from across Scotland will meet this weekend at Tulliallan for a 48-hour Conference, sponsored by the Diocese of Glasgow and Galloway. This is the first time such a gathering has been held in the Scottish Episcopal Church.

New Dean named for Diocese of Glasgow & Galloway
At the Glasgow & Galloway Synod on Saturday 27 February, the Bishop-Elect Very Rev Dr Gregor Duncan announced that following his Consecration as Bishop on 23 April it is his intention to appoint the Rev Ian Barcroft as the new Dean of the Diocese.

Prayer for the Day
The Very Rev Kelvin Holdsworth, the Provost of St Mary's Cathedral in Glasgow is featured in the BBC Radio 4 Prayer for the Day slot on 16 January 2010 and 18-22 January 2010. The two minute slot is broadcast at 0543. Those who want to hear these broadcasts but who are not early risers can listen to them using the BBC's iPlayer via the Prayer for the Day website. The text of each broadcast will also be published on Kelvin Holdsworth's blog.

Bishop of Aberdeen and Orkney meets with North East and Island MSPs
The Rt Rev Dr Bob Gillies, Bishop of Aberdeen & Orkney, has visited the Scottish Parliament to meet with MSPs representing the North East of Scotland and the Northern Islands, for a full and frank exchange of views on the issues surrounding minimum pricing of alcohol and the controversial use of heroin as a substitute to the methadone programme for drug addiction.

‘Nettle that is alcohol misuse must be grasped’ says Scottish Bishop
The Rt Rev Dr Bob Gillies, Bishop of Aberdeen & Orkney is calling on Scottish Parliament to adopt the forthcoming Alcohol Bill, saying 'Some bits of the Bill are going to be controversial, especially minimum pricing. However if our nation and each of us within it is to have a healthy future then the nettle that is alcohol misuse must be grasped.'

Piskie on the Plinth
The Rev Jim Wynn-Evans, a member of Edinburgh Diocese, will be on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square, London from 8am-9am tomorrow (20 August). Jim will mime a typical sunday service from his church (Old St Paul’s in Edinburgh) and will appeal for support for the restoration and renewal project at Old St Paul’s.
