Primus comments on proposed new Bill to tackle issues surrounding sectarianism in Scotland
The Most Rev David Chillingworth, Bishop of St Andrews, Dunkeld & Dunblane and Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church says :"The Scottish Government is to be commended for the intentions which lie behind the proposed Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications (Scotland) Bill. Recent expressions of sectarian behaviour – particularly surrounding football matches – have been shocking and are unworthy of the tolerant and open society which Scotland aspires to be. There is a responsibility on any government to act so as to preserve peace and order. However it seems that this proposed legislation raises two issues: that rushed legislation often turns out not to be good legislation and that the proposed legislation addresses symptom rather than cause."

Scottish Elections
'The Most Rev David Chillingworth, Bishop of St Andrews, Dunkeld & Dunblane and Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church says "I send warm congratulations to Alex Salmond and his party on their success in the recent elections. We value greatly the close relationships which have developed between the Scottish Government, members of the Scottish Parliament and faith groups. Public representatives are people with a calling to serve the whole community. We respect that commitment and support them with our prayers and our good will. This is an important time in Scotland. We are shaping a new future. We are trying to lay to rest the sectarianism of the past. As churches, we look forward to working with the new Scottish Government to shape the values which will define our community. Scottish society carries forward from the past a distinctive character and particular strengths. We look forward to being part of the work of re-fashioning that distinctive character for the future."

Five candidates have been short-listed for the office of Bishop of Brechin which became vacant in October 2010 following the early retirement of the late Rt Rev Dr John Mantle who had served the Diocese of Brechin since 2005. Dr Mantle died in November 2010. The five candidates have been selected by a Preparatory Committee (chaired by the Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church) consisting of clergy and lay church members who represent the Diocese of Brechin and the wider Church. The next stage in the selection process is a meeting of each of the candidates with members of an Electoral Synod (representatives of clergy and lay church members from the Diocese of Brechin only). That meeting will take place on Saturday 7 May, with the election of the new Bishop taking place on Wednesday 18 May.
