End of Life Assistance (Scotland) Bill
The Most Rev David Chillingworth, Bishop of St Andrews, Dunkeld & Dunblane and Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church says: “The College of Bishops made a submission to the End of Life Assistance (Scotland) Committee in May 2010 on the issues raised by the End of Life Assistance [Scotland] Bill. “The submission recognises the differing views which are held among members of our Church. It draws on resolutions of the Lambeth Conference 1998 and contributions on this subject from the Archbishop of Canterbury. “The view of the Bishops is that they would be reluctant to see moves to enshrine the right to die through assisted suicide formally enshrined in legislation. However they draw attention to the underlying meaning of 'euthanasia' as 'dying well.' The Church is committed to supporting the hospice movement and to compassionate care of those who face debilitating illnesses which erode human dignity and well-being.'

Back to Church Sunday - 26 September 2010
The Most Rev David Chillingworth, Bishop of St Andrews, Dunkeld and Dunblane and Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church says "Many congregations in the Scottish Episcopal Church will be taking part in Back to Church Sunday on 26 September and inviting friends and neighbours to join them in church. It's an opportunity for us to welcome people who want to 'try out' the experience of church. You may not have been to church since you were a child. Perhaps you are thinking about bringing your own children? Maybe you have never been to church and wonder what part it might play in your life? Whatever your reason is, the people of our congregations will be delighted to welcome you." Details of a Scottish Episcopal Church near you can be found through our online Church Directory.

Primus condemns planned Koran burning by American pastor
The Most Rev David Chillingworth, Bishop of St Andrews, Dunked & Dunblane and Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church says “The burning of holy books is one of the most extreme manifestations of religious intolerance. It dishonours and devalues the faith of those who hold these texts as sacred. I unreservedly condemn the actions of those who plan to attack the Islamic community by desecrating their scriptures. Those who threaten to do this should be aware that, in today's world, this will be seen also as a cultural and political provocation and may put at risk the lives of innocent people."

Permitted changes to the 1982 Scottish Liturgy
Reports in the media over the past 24 hours have suggested that permitted changes to the text of the 1982 Scottish Liturgy have altered the Church’s understanding of God. The permitted changes are, in fact, a small selection of alternative words to replace those which may be considered to be gender specific, particularly those which refer to people in general. The suggested alternatives use language in a way that reflects everyday speech and writing. Since the 1982 Scottish Liturgy was drafted, conventions have changed concerning the use of words which express gender, and the Church is merely seeking to reflect these in its worship. No change in our understanding of God is taking place. Other churches have been addressing the use of inclusive language in liturgy for some time now and therefore these developments are neither new nor unique to the Scottish Episcopal Church. A survey was carried out amongst clergy on the use of the 1982 Liturgy three years ago – feedback from this survey requested that the use of inclusive language in liturgies be considered and appropriate alternatives be offered. The production of the list of permitted changes was a response to this request.
