The Rt Rev Dr. John Mantle, who has been Bishop of Brechin in the Scottish Episcopal Church for five years, has announced that he will take early retirement in October. He will be 65 early next year. Bishop John was diagnosed with a cancer 18 months ago.
Dr Mantle was for a time brought up in Dundee, where he was confirmed and ordained and where he started his ministry. Later he served 25 years in England, first as a Cambridge Chaplain, and finally in Westminster as the Archbishops’ Adviser for Bishops’ Ministry.
When Dr Mantle was elected to Brechin in 2005 he brought renewed leadership to the Diocese and has guided it through significant stages of growth and development.
It is a testimony to his efforts that the Diocese is stronger and more cohesive. He has embraced all areas of life in the Diocese with his characteristic mixture of common sense and pastoral care and has successfully balanced the need for change with the Diocese’s heritage and tradition.
