Churches across Scotland are expecting to double their congregations this Sunday, as part of the ‘Back to Church Sunday’ initiative. In this year of Homecoming, Episcopal churches across Scotland are inviting people ‘back to church’ this Sunday (27 September). The ‘Back to Church Sunday’ initiative started five years ago in the diocese of Manchester and spread successfully across other Church of England dioceses. This year, churches in Scotland have joined the initiative, by issuing personal invitations saying ‘come as you are’. Congregations are being encouraged to invite a friend to church with them or have invited people who have had connections with their churches in the past (eg through weddings and baptisms).
The Bishops of the Scottish Episcopal Church have been adding their support to congregations in the ‘Back to Church Sunday’ initiative. The Bishop of Aberdeen & Orkney, the Rt Rev Dr Bob Gillies, has been handing out invitations while travelling on inter-island ferries; the Bishop of St Andrews, Dunkeld & Dunblane and Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church, The Most Rev David Chillingworth has been inviting people back to church as he travels throughout his diocese and beyond on his Brompton folding bicycle, and says “The year of Homecoming couldn’t be a better time to invite people back to our churches and ‘come as you are’ says it all! Churches are where people can be just as they are and I know there will be a warm welcome in our churches not just this Sunday but every Sunday!”
