In 2007, General Synod agreed to: establish a Gift Day throughout the whole of the Scottish Episcopal Church; that the said Gift Day be fixed for the last Sunday in June each year; that a special additional collection be taken within each Church on that day and that the proceeds of all of these collections be added to the Scottish Episcopal Church’s Community Fund thereby raising the profile of the said Community Fund.Established in the 1980s, the Community Fund is designed to make small, one-off grants, to people in desperate need who cannot find help elsewhere. It is run from the General Synod Office and is funded by donations from individuals or congregations. It has helped many people to buy basic items of furniture, eg cookers, heaters, and flooring as well as winter clothing and shoes for children and occasional assistance with transport and some financial assistance to enable people to take up employment. The letters of thanks received show that it has made an enormous difference to many lives.
Anyone wishing to contribute to the Community Fund can do so by contributing to the Annual Gift Day through their congregation. Where possible this can be maximised through the use of Gift Aid and it would be best if gifts could be made to the local congregation so that the congregation can recover the tax.
The full amount, including any tax recovered, can then be remitted to the General Synod Office, 21 Grosvenor Crescent, Edinburgh EH12 5EE. Cheques should be made payable to “The Scottish Episcopal Church”.
Donations can also be sent directly to the General Synod Office throughout the year.
The Community Fund is currently low, resulting in some requests being turned down. Please support the Gift Day
