The Diocese of Edinburgh affirmed a commitment to unity across the theological divide during its Diocesan Synod on 8 March 2008.
The following motion, proposed by the Rev Donald Reid of St John the Evangelist Church, Princes Street, Edinburgh, was applauded and unanimously supported:
"The members of this synod affirm that our experience is that we can hold together as brothers and sisters in the faith and that we do not wish to be forced apart. We acknowledge that there are sincerely held views which differ but we are determined not to be divided. We pray that God will call deeper truths out of our present experience. We commend this spirit of waiting on God to the wider Anglican Communion."
In the past few weeks, Edinburgh Diocese has held two conferences - called 'Together at Lambeth' - which were designed to help diverse members of the diocese become more aware of the complex issues to be addressed at the Lambeth Conference in July.
The aim of the first conference was to help participants become more aware of the identity of the Scottish Episcopal Church, in terms for example, of its history, socio-political profile, varieties of churchmanship and distinctive liturgy. The aim of the second was to deepen understanding of the wider Anglican Communion - and the Scottish Episcopal Church’s place in it.
