The new Bishop of Argyll and The Isles is to be enthroned at The Cathedral of The Isles, Cumbrae on Saturday 16 April. The Rt Rev Kevin Pearson was consecrated in St John’s Cathedral, Oban on 4 February this year. As there are two cathedrals in his Diocese, he will be enthroned as Bishop and installed as Provost in the Cathedral of the Isles, Cumbrae. The ceremony, which starts with Bishop Kevin knocking three times on the Cathedral door with his crozier, will be conducted initially by the Rev Canon Hugh Lee, Synod Clerk and formerly Rector of Dunoon, but once installed Bishop kevin will continue with the service.
The Rt Rev Dr Idris Jones, former Bishop of Glasgow and Galloway and former Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church will preach. The Rt Rev Dr Robert Gillies, Bishop of Aberdeen & Orkney will also be present.
Other guests will incluce the Lord Lieutenant for the Isle of Cumbrae, John Duncan QPM as well as descendants of the family of the founder in 1851 of the Cathedral and College George Frederick Boyle, Earl of Glasgow. They will include the present Earl and two other descendants. A descendant of Bishop Chinnery Haldane, who was responsible for the College becoming a retreat house, will also be present alongside many other representatives of the community on Cumbrae including Kenny Gibson MSP and Margaret Smith Community Councillor.
For those not lucky enough to get a seat in what will be a packed Cathedral, there will be opportunities to meet the new Bishop when he preaches on Palm Sunday at the 11am Eucharist and at services on Monday and Tuesday of Holy Week when he will lead Choral Evensong at 3pm. The Cathedral Choir led by Alastair Chisholm with Jonathan Cohen, organ, will sing at the Enthronement and again on Palm Sunday and at the Choral Evensongs.
