General Synod 2008 - Saturday 14 June

Posted Saturday 14 June 2008

The final day of General Synod started with Morning Office. Following the distribution of ballot papers for membership of the Mission and Ministry Board, business got underway with a presentation from The Rt Rev Mark Strange, Bishop of Moray, Ross & Caithness on the Provincial Youth Network (PYN) in which he reminded Synod that the PYN is a network and not a committee - and can only function with the necessary diocesan support.

Following this, Nancy Adams gave a presentation on the work of the Church in Society Committee and introduced Alan Werritty who spoke about the issues of climate change and gave Synod suggestions of how, as Christians, we can respond to these issues.

Professor Patricia Peattie presented the feedback from dioceses on the Strategic Review /Response to Rule 10 Motion. Some comments were made on this and it was clearly stated that to help shape the future the Church must be clear about what its core needs are and how these can be resourced - both centrally and at diocesan level.

Professor Peattie then presented the Budget and Quota figure and proposed Motion 34; That this Synod, having examined the proposed budgets for the General Synod for the year 2009, agree to a quota figure of £568,318 for that year.

The Rt Rev Bob Gillies, Bishop of Aberdeen & Orkney, launched the next Church's Provincial Conference - which will take place from 2-4 October 2009. It's theme is the Five Marks of Mission and the biblical passage for the conference is John 4:3-43 - Jesus and the woman at the well. The title of the Provincial Conference is 'Living Well - proclaim; discover; respond'.

The final business of Synod was the announcement of the election results for board memberships:
Mission & Ministry Board convenership: The Rt Rev David Chillingworth, Bishop of St Andrews, Dunkeld & Dunblane Mission & Ministry Board reps: Rev Isaac Poobalan, Rev Alison Simpson, Mrs Gill Young Administration Board rep: Mrs Hilary Gibson.
Clergy Discipline Tribunal: Sheriff Ian Peebles, Lord McEwan, Sheriff Margaret Gimblett, Rev Anne Tomlinson, Rev Canon Professor John Richardson, Mr Fraser Falconer, Mrs Sue Horne, Mr John Whittall.
Synod endorsed all these nominations.

The final two Motions (35 and 36) - that the convenership of Mr Ian Stewart as the Convener of the Administration Board; and that the convenership of Professor Judith George as the Convener of the Ministry Development Committee be extended until the conclusion of General Synod 2010 - were both carried unanimously.

The Most Rev Dr Idris Jones, Primus, then confirmed the Acts of Synod and closed the meeting of General Synod 2008.

Prayer for the Week

Candle

Sunday 8 November 2009

'Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ is the resurrection and the life: raise us, who trust in him, from the death of sin to the life of righteousness, that we may seek those things which are above, where he reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.'
