General Synod Saturday 9 June

Posted Saturday 09 June 2012

The final day of General Synod got underway with The Rev Professor David Jasper, Convener of the Doctrine Committe introducting the new Grosvenor Essay -  Marriage and Human Intimacy: Perspectives on same-sex relationships and the life of the church. .  Professor Jasper explained that the Grosvenor Essays are not intended to offer a position or conculsions but to enable informed debate.

Motion 30, that this Synod receive the paper entitled “Truly Called…Two” for use as a discussion document at all levels within the Church, was introduced by the Rev Dr Anne Tomlinson.  The Paper seeks to build upon the understanding and discussion about the Church making its diaconal essence more explicit.  Motion 30 was carried.

Mr Michael Lugton, Convener of the Administration Board, referred to the report of the Board and its pendant committees.  Convener of the Investment Committee, Mr Jeremy Burchill,  reported on the performance of the investment portfolio which seems to be performing well despite difficult market conditions.  However, he urged the continued need to exercise care and prudence.  In reply to a question on ethical banking, it was advised that this was a matter for the Standing Committee.  The Convener of the Standing Committee, Mr David Palmer, later advised Synod that this would be considered by the Standing Commmittee during the forthcoming year.  Mr Nick Bowry, Convener of the Personnel Committee reassured Synod that the Committee’s agenda included work in relation to the development of more formal personnel policies.

Motion 31, that this Synod, having examined the proposed budgets for the General Synod for the year 2013, agree to a quota figure of £639,648 for that year, was introduced by the Convener of the Standing Committee, Mr David Palmer.  The motion was carried.

The Secretary General Mr John Stuart announced the appointments to Board and Committee vacancies, (Mission and Ministry Board - Dr Ian Findlay, the Rev Chris Mayo and the Rev Eileen Thompson; Administration Board - the Rev Tim Daplyn; and Mr Andrew November as the Chair of the Pension Fund Trustees).

General Synod 2012 was closed by the Confirmation of Acts of Synod by the Primus.
