A memorial service for the former Bishop of Brechin, the Rt Rev Dr John Mantle, will take place in St Paul’s Cathedral, Dundee on Saturday 22 January at 2.30pm. Dr Mantle died on 29 November 2010, having retired from the Office of Bishop of Brechin on 16 October 2010 at the age of 64.
Dr. Mantle’s widow, Gill, and their children Anna and Tim will be joined at the memorial service by colleagues and friends from across the Diocese of Brechin and the wider Scottish Episcopal Church; the Lord Provost of Dundee and Provost of Angus; local MSPs; the Bishop of Iowa and representatives of other church denominations
The tribute will be given by The Rev Canon Trevor Pitt, Canon Emeritus of Newcastle Cathedral and long standing friend of Dr Mantle; the service will be conducted by The Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church, the Most Rev David Chillingworth who says “John was a child of the Scottish Episcopal Church and he returned to his native Dundee as Bishop of Brechin to share his faith, his passion for ministry and his experience with clergy and people. Last October we celebrated that ministry at his Farewell Eucharist. John laid the foundation upon which others will build and we give thanks for the ministry which he so faithfully carried out among us”
Dr Mantle’s funeral took place in the church of St Kyneburgha, Castor near Peterborough in December; the church Dr Mantle attended following his retirement and in which he spent some years before coming to Dundee as Bishop of Brechin in 2005.
Dr Mantle was for a time brought up in Dundee, where he was confirmed and ordained and where he started his ministry. Later he served 25 years in England, first as a Cambridge Chaplain, and finally in Westminster as the Archbishops’ Adviser for Bishops’ Ministry.
When Dr Mantle was elected as Bishop of Brechin in 2005 he brought renewed leadership to the Diocese of Brechin and guided it through significant stages of growth and development.
