The Rt Rev Brian Smith, Bishop of Edinburgh, says:
"The whole church must be saddened by the death this weekend of The Very Rev Professor Thomas Torrance. Tom Torrance was one of the most significant and influential theologians in Scotland, if not the world, during the twentieth century. His theological scholarship, his commitment to theological education, his desire to see theology engage with other disciplines, particularly the sciences, and his passion for ecumenism were outstanding. His many publications, and his contribution to theological learning, through being the founding editor of the Scottish Journal of Theology, have made a lasting mark on our theological landscape.
"It was a moving scene when he, as a former Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland recently came in his wheel chair to be present at and introduce his son Ian as a subsequent Moderator of that Assembly. His graciousness as a churchman, and his friendship will be known and remembered with affection by many. The list of international honours which he was awarded for his work is vast, yet these were held by him with a gentle humility. I personally always felt it to be a very singular privilege, when an undergraduate, and President of the Student Christian Movement in Edinburgh University, I was enabled to have as my senior advisory group the trio of The Rev Dr Robert Mackie, Bishop Kenneth Carey and Professor Tom Torrance."
