Short list for election for new Bishop of Edinburgh
Three candidates have been short-listed for election to the office of Bishop of Edinburgh which became vacant in August 2011 following the retirement of the Rt Rev Brian Smith, who had served the Diocese of Edinburgh since 2001. The candidates are: the Very Rev Dr John Armes, Dean of the Diocese of Edinburgh and Canon of St Mary's Cathedral, Edinburgh; Rector of St John the Evangelist church, Edinburgh; the Rev Michael Parker, Senior Minister for English-speaking congregations, All Saints Cathedral, Cairo; the Rev Canon Dr Alvyn Pettersen, Canon Theologian of Worcester Cathedral. Primus and Dean of Edinburgh Visit Occupy Edinburgh
The Most Rev David Chillingworth, Bishop of St Andrews, Dunkeld & Dunblane and Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church and the Very Rev Dr John Armes, Rector of St John’s Episcopal Church, Princes Street and Dean of Edinburgh met yesterday with members of Occupy Edinburgh in St Andrews Square. Following the visit, the Primus commented “'We were warmly welcomed at the Occupy encampment in St Andrews Square. As a church, we try to build relationships and engage in dialogue in every part of our society. This visit was part of that developing picture." Full entry →

We are called to seek just treatment for those most vunerable in hard economic times
The Occupy Movement which has arisen in cities across the world is a sign of the deep impact of the continuing economic crisis. The Most Rev David Chillingworth, Bishop of St Andrews, Dunkeld & Dunblane and Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church says “The Occupy Movement has the potential to become a 'people movement' which challenges our society to debate and explore the values on which our future economic life will be built. There is a widespread feeling that issues regarding the banking and financial sector have not yet been firmly or adequately addressed by governments. The concern of churches with these issues is rooted in the teaching of Jesus. We believe that we are called to be concerned for the poor and to seek just treatment for those who are most vulnerable in hard economic times. Full entry →
