Scottish Episcopal Church hosts Porvoo Primates and Presiding Bishops meeting

October 21, 2015

The Scottish Episcopal Church is hosting the bi-annual meeting of the Porvoo Primates and Presiding Bishops in Edinburgh (21/22 October).

The theme of the two day meeting, at which the Archbishop of Canterbury is present, is Prayer, Spirituality and Pilgrimage and the Primates and Presiding Bishops are discussing issues of national identity, the refugee crisis, church and current geo-political challenges.

In welcoming the Primates and Presiding Bishops to Scotland, the Most Rev David Chillingworth, Bishop of St Andrews, Dunkeld & Dunblane and Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church says ‘The Scottish Episcopal Church is honoured to host the meeting of the Primates of the Churches of the Porvoo Communion. We have been enthusiastic members of the Porvoo Communion from the beginning of its life and we look forward to a strengthening of relationships during our meeting this week.’

The Porvoo Communion is a communion of churches that have signed an agreement to “share a common life in mission and service”. These churches are either Anglican or Lutheran. The Porvoo churches agree on certain fundamental issues, but Porvoo is not a new confession. The churches maintain their respective identities.
