PSALMODY

Antiphon: Be joyful in God, all you lands;* sing the glory of his name! (Ps. 66.1)

Opening

VENITE

1 O come let us sing out to the Lord,* let us shout in triumph to the rock of our salvation. 2 Let us come before his face with thanksgiving* and cry out to him joyfully in psalms. 3 For the Lord is a great God,* and a great king above all gods. 4 In his hands are the depths of the earth,* and the peaks of the mountains are his also. 5 The sea is his and he made it;* his hands moulded dry land. 6 Come let us worship and bow down,* and kneel before the Lord our maker. 7 For he himself is our God;* we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand. 8 Today if only you would hear his voice:* ‘Do not harden your hearts as Israel did in the wilderness; 9 when your fathers tested me;* put me to proof though they had seen my works. 10 Of whom I swore in my wrath:* “They shall not enter my rest.”’ Glory to the Father… (may be said by all) or (from Psalms 66 and 92) 1 All the earth bows down before you,* sings to you, sings out your name. 2 Bless our God, you peoples;* make the voice of his praise to be heard. 3 It is a good thing to give thanks to the Lord,* and to sing praises to your name, O Most High; 4 to tell of your loving-kindness early in the morning* and of your faithfulness in the night season. Glory to the Father… or a suitable hymn

Psalm 119

Zayin 49 Remember your word to your servant,* because you have given me hope. 50 This is my comfort in my trouble,* that your promise gives me life. 51 The proud have derided me cruelly,* but I have not turned from your law. 52 When I remember your judgements of old,* O Lord, I take great comfort. 53 I am filled with a burning rage,* because of the wicked who forsake your law. 54 Your statutes have been like songs to me* wherever I have lived as a stranger. 55 I remember your name in the night, O Lord,* and dwell upon your law. 56 This is how it has been with me,* because I have kept your commandments. Heth 57 You only are my portion, O Lord;* I have promised to keep your words. 58 I entreat you with all my heart,* be merciful to me according to your promise. 59 I have considered my ways* and turned my feet toward your decrees. 60 I hasten and do not tarry* to keep your commandments. 61 Though the cords of the wicked entangle me,* I do not forget your law. 62 At midnight I will rise to give you thanks,* because of your righteous judgements. 63 I am a companion of all who fear you* and of those who keep your commandments. 64 The earth, O Lord, is full of your love;* instruct me in your statutes. Teth 65 O Lord, you have dealt graciously with your servant,* according to your word. 66 Teach me discernment and knowledge,* for I have believed in your commandments. 67 Before I was afflicted I went astray,* but now I keep your word. 68 You are good and you bring forth good;* instruct me in your statutes. 69 The proud have smeared me with lies,* but I will keep your commandments with my whole heart. 70 Their heart is gross and fat,* but my delight is in your law. 71 It is good for me that I have been afflicted,* that I might learn your statutes. 72 The law of your mouth is dearer to me* than thousands in gold and silver. Conclusion (from Isaiah 12) 1 Behold God is my salvation;* I will trust and not be afraid; 2 the Lord God is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. 3 With joy you will draw water* from the wells of salvation. 4 Give thanks to the Lord, call upon his name;* make known his deeds among the nations. 5 Sing to the Lord for he has done gloriously;* let this be known in all the earth. 6 Shout and sing for joy, O inhabitant of Sion,* for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel. Glory to the Father….. Antiphon: Be joyful in God, all you lands; Sing the glory of his name!

READING(S)

Job 3:1-26

After this Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth. Job said: ‘Let the day perish on which I was born, and the night that said, “A man-child is conceived.” Let that day be darkness! May God above not seek it, or light shine on it. Let gloom and deep darkness claim it. Let clouds settle upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it. That night—let thick darkness seize it! let it not rejoice among the days of the year; let it not come into the number of the months. Yes, let that night be barren; let no joyful cry be heard in it. Let those curse it who curse the Sea, those who are skilled to rouse up Leviathan. Let the stars of its dawn be dark; let it hope for light, but have none; may it not see the eyelids of the morning— because it did not shut the doors of my mother’s womb, and hide trouble from my eyes. ‘Why did I not die at birth, come forth from the womb and expire? Why were there knees to receive me, or breasts for me to suck? Now I would be lying down and quiet; I would be asleep; then I would be at rest with kings and counsellors of the earth who rebuild ruins for themselves, or with princes who have gold, who fill their houses with silver. Or why was I not buried like a stillborn child, like an infant that never sees the light? There the wicked cease from troubling, and there the weary are at rest. There the prisoners are at ease together; they do not hear the voice of the taskmaster. The small and the great are there, and the slaves are free from their masters. ‘Why is light given to one in misery, and life to the bitter in soul, who long for death, but it does not come, and dig for it more than for hidden treasures; who rejoice exceedingly, and are glad when they find the grave? Why is light given to one who cannot see the way, whom God has fenced in? For my sighing comes like my bread, and my groanings are poured out like water. Truly the thing that I fear comes upon me, and what I dread befalls me. I am not at ease, nor am I quiet; I have no rest; but trouble comes.’

Acts 9:10-19a

Now there was a disciple in Damascus named Ananias. The Lord said to him in a vision, ‘Ananias.’ He answered, ‘Here I am, Lord.’ The Lord said to him, ‘Get up and go to the street called Straight, and at the house of Judas look for a man of Tarsus named Saul. At this moment he is praying, and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him so that he might regain his sight.’ But Ananias answered, ‘Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much evil he has done to your saints in Jerusalem; and here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who invoke your name.’ But the Lord said to him, ‘Go, for he is an instrument whom I have chosen to bring my name before Gentiles and kings and before the people of Israel; I myself will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.’ So Ananias went and entered the house. He laid his hands on Saul and said, ‘Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on your way here, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.’ And immediately something like scales fell from his eyes, and his sight was restored. Then he got up and was baptized, and after taking some food, he regained his strength. For several days he was with the disciples in Damascus, Silence Response (Ps. 63.4) I will bless you Lord as long as I live. I will bless you Lord as long as I live. And lift up my hands in your name. As long as I live. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. I will bless you Lord as long as I live.

BENEDICTUS

Benedictus Antiphon: God will guide us* in the way of peace

. 1 Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel,* for he has come to his people and set them free. 2 He has raised up for us a mighty saviour,* born of the house of his servant David. 3 Through his holy prophets he promised of old* that he would save us from our enemies, from the hands of all that hate us. 4 He promised to show mercy to our forebears,* and to remember his holy covenant. 5 This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:* to set us free from the hands of our enemies, 6 free to worship him without fear,* holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life. 7 You my child shall be called the prophet of the Most High,* for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, 8 to give his people knowledge of salvation* by the forgiveness of all their sins. 9 In the tender compassion of our God* the dawn from on high shall break upon us, 10 to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death,* and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Glory to the Father… (may be said by all)
