A light for Aleppo

November 9, 2016

At 5 pm on Sunday 20 November the Chaplaincy of the University of Edinburgh will spark a trail of light to support and raise funds for the people of Aleppo. Communities will gather along both sides of the Firth of Forth to light beacons of vigilance and hope. The signal will spread to other beacons around the world, and by social media using the hashtag #alightforaleppo

The Rev Dr Harriet Harris, Chaplain of the University of Edinburgh says: “Every day, the people of Aleppo have less food, fewer medical supplies, and aid is not getting through. It is an excruciating situation and we are helpless to deliver food, medicine or peace, but we will light beacons to send a message of solidarity and hope. You can come to an event, start one of your own, or simply light a candle in your own homes. Details of all the events are on our web site www.alightforaleppo.org where you can also donate to Oxfam and Medicin Sans Frontieres, who are working in the region.”

In supporting the initiative, the Rt Rev Dr John Armes, Bishop of Edinburgh says “I shall be lighting a candle for Aleppo on 20 November and I encourage everyone to join me. It makes a huge difference when you know people are praying for you. If each candle is a prayer and each prayer a determination to help, we can be part of a flood of light showing the people of Aleppo that we care about their terrible suffering. May the whole of our coastline be alight with hope for the people of Aleppo on 20 November.”
