PSALMODY

Antiphon: Where can I go from your Spirit?* Where can I flee from your presence?
(Psalm 139.7)

Opening (from Psalm 139)

1. I will thank you because I am marvellously made;*
your works are wonderful, and I know it well.

2. My body was not hidden from you,*
while I was being made in secret and woven in the depths of the earth.

3. How deep I find your thoughts, O God!*
how great is the sum of them!

4. If I were to count them, they would be more in number than the sand;*
to count them all, my life span would need to be like yours.

Psalm 116
1. I love the Lord *
who has heard the voice of my supplication,

2. who has listened to me *
whenever I called.

3. The cords of death entangled me; the grip of the grave took hold of me; *
I came to grief and sorrow.

4. Then I called upon the name of the Lord: *
“O Lord, I pray you, save my life.”

5. Gracious is the Lord and righteous; *
our God is full of compassion.

6. The Lord watches over the innocent; *
I was brought very low, and the Lord helped me.

7. Turn again to your rest, O my soul, *
for the Lord has treated you well.

8. For you, O Lord, have rescued my life from death, *
my eyes from tears, and my feet from stumbling.

9. I will walk in the presence of the Lord *
in the land of the living.

10. I believed, even when I said, *
”I have been brought very low.”

11. In my distress I said, *
”No one can be trusted.”

12. How shall I repay you, O Lord, *
for all the good things you have done for me?

13. I will lift up the cup of salvation *
and call upon your name.

14. I will fulfil my vows to the Lord *
in the presence of all the people.

15. Precious in your sight, O Lord *
is the death of your servants.

16. O Lord, I am your servant; *
I am your servant and the child of your handmaid;
you have freed me from my bonds.

17. I will offer you the sacrifice of thanksgiving *
and call upon the name of the Lord.

18. I will fulfil my vows to the Lord *
in the presence of all the people of God.

19. In the courts of the house of the Lord, *
in the midst of you, O Jerusalem. Hallelujah!

Glory …

Psalm 117

READING(S)

Luke 7.1-17

After Jesus had finished all his sayings in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum. A centurion there had a slave whom he valued highly, and who was ill and close to death. When he heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to him, asking him to come and heal his slave. When they came to Jesus, they appealed to him earnestly, saying, ‘He is worthy of having you do this for him, for he loves our people, and it is he who built our synagogue for us.’ And Jesus went with them, but when he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to say to him, ‘Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; therefore I did not presume to come to you. But only speak the word, and let my servant be healed. For I also am a man set under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, “Go”, and he goes, and to another, “Come”, and he comes, and to my slave, “Do this”, and the slave does it.’ When Jesus heard this he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd that followed him, he said, ‘I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.’ When those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the slave in good health. Soon afterwards he went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went with him. As he approached the gate of the town, a man who had died was being carried out. He was his mother’s only son, and she was a widow; and with her was a large crowd from the town. When the Lord saw her, he had compassion for her and said to her, ‘Do not weep.’ Then he came forward and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, ‘Young man, I say to you, rise!’ The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother. Fear seized all of them; and they glorified God, saying, ‘A great prophet has risen among us!’ and ‘God has looked favourably on his people!’ This word about him spread throughout Judea and all the surrounding country.

Response Psalm 105.5

Remember the marvels the Lord has done.
Remember the marvels the Lord has done.
The wonders and the judgements of the mouth of the Lord.
What wonders God has done!
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit
Remember the marvels the Lord has done.

SONG OF MARY

Song of Mary Antiphon: My soul proclaims * the greatness of the Lord.

1 My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
*my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour;
2 for he has looked with favour on his lowly servant;*
from this day all generations will call me blessed.
3 The Almighty has done great things for me*
and holy is his name.
4 He has mercy on those who fear him*
in every generation.
5 He has shown the strength of his arm;*
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.
6 He has cast down the mighty from their thrones*
and has lifted up the lowly.
7 He has filled the hungry with good things,*
and the rich he has sent away empty.
8 He has come to the help of his servant Israel,*
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
9 the promise he made to our forebears,*
to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father... (may be said by all)

PRAYERS

Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Do not bring us to the time of trial,
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours,
now and for ever. Amen.

you always guide your people
whom you build up on the foundation of your love:

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, world without end
