Week B

O God make speed to save us;
O Lord make haste to help us.

Glory to God, Source of all Being, Eternal Word, and Holy Spirit;*
as it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be for ever.

Opening (from Psalm 139)

1. I will thank you because I am marvellously made;*
your works are wonderful, and I know it well.

2. My body was not hidden from you,*
while I was being made in secret and woven in the depths of the earth.

3. How deep I find your thoughts, O God!*
how great is the sum of them!

4. If I were to count them, they would be more in number than the sand;*
to count them all, my life span would need to be like yours.

1. Do not fret yourself because of evildoers; *
do not be jealous of those who do wrong.

who shall give you your heart’s desire.

5. Commit your way to the Lord and put your trust in the Holy One *

14. The wicked draw their sword and bend their bow to strike down the poor and needy, *
to slaughter those who are upright in their ways.

15. Their sword shall go through their own heart, *
and their bow shall be broken.

16. The little that the righteous have *
is better than great riches of the wicked.

17. For the power of the wicked shall be broken, *
but the Lord upholds the righteous.

Luke 19.41-20.8

"As he came near and saw the city, he wept over it, saying, ‘If you, even you, had only recognized on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. Indeed, the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up ramparts around you and surround you, and hem you in on every side. They will crush you to the ground, you and your children within you, and they will not leave within you one stone upon another; because you did not recognize the time of your visitation from God.’ Then he entered the temple and began to drive out those who were selling things there; and he said, ‘It is written, “My house shall be a house of prayer”; but you have made it a den of robbers.’ Every day he was teaching in the temple. The chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people kept looking for a way to kill him; but they did not find anything they could do, for all the people were spellbound by what they heard. One day, as he was teaching the people in the temple and telling the good news, the chief priests and the scribes came with the elders and said to him, ‘Tell us, by what authority are you doing these things? Who is it who gave you this authority?’ He answered them, ‘I will also ask you a question, and you tell me: Did the baptism of John come from heaven, or was it of human origin?’ They discussed it with one another, saying, ‘If we say, “From heaven”, he will say, “Why did you not believe him?” But if we say, “Of human origin”, all the people will stone us; for they are convinced that John was a prophet.’ So they answered that they did not know where it came from. Then Jesus said to them, ‘Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.’"

Lord, have mercy upon us.

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,

on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Do not bring us to the time of trial,
but deliver us from evil.

and the glory are yours,

Collect of the Day

O God,
you have prepared for those who love you
good things no eye has seen:
pour into our hearts such love of you,
that, by loving you in all things and above all things,
we may be worthy of your promises,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
