Barnabas, Apostle

O God make speed to save us;
O Lord make haste to help us.

Glory to God, Source of all Being, Eternal Word, and Holy Spirit;*
as it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be for ever.
Amen.

PSALMODY

Antiphon: Sing to the Lord a new song;* sing the praises of God in the congregation of the faithful.
(Psalm 149.1)

Opening (from Psalm 149)

1. Let Israel rejoice in their maker;*
let the children of Zion be joyful in their sovereign.

2. For the Lord takes pleasure in this people*
and adorns the poor with victory.

3. Let the faithful rejoice in triumph;*
let them be joyful on their beds.

4. Let the praises of God be in their throat*
and a two-edged sword in their hand.

Psalm 105.23-45
23. Israel came into Egypt, *
and Jacob became a sojourner in the land of Ham.

24. The Lord made this people exceedingly fruitful; *
making them stronger than their enemies;

25. whose heart God turned, so that they hated this people, *
and dealt unjustly with the servants of God.

26. O Lord, you sent Moses your servant, *
and Aaron whom you had chosen.

27. They worked your signs among them, *
and portents in the land of Ham.

28. You sent darkness, and it grew dark; *
but the Egyptians rebelled against your words.

29. You turned their waters into blood *
and caused their fish to die.

30. Their land was overrun by frogs, *
in the very chambers of their kings.

31. You spoke, and there came swarms of insects *
and gnats within all their borders.

32. You gave them hailstones instead of rain, *
and flames of fire throughout their land.

33. You blasted their vines and their fig trees *
and shattered every tree in their country.

34. You spoke, and the locust came, *
and young locusts without number,

35. which ate up all the green plants in their land *
and devoured the fruit of their soil.

36. You struck down the firstborn of their land, *
the first fruits of all their strength.

37. You led out your people with silver and gold; *
in all their tribes there was not one that stumbled.

38. Egypt was glad of their going, *
because they were afraid of them.

39. You spread out a cloud for a covering *
and a fire to give light in the night season.

40. They asked, and quails appeared, *
and you satisfied them with bread from heaven.

41. You opened the rock, and water flowed, *
so the river ran in the dry places.

42. For you, O God, remembered your holy word *
and Abraham your servant.

43 So you led forth your people with gladness, *
your chosen with shouts of joy.

44. You gave your people the lands of the nations, *
and they took the fruit of others’ toil,

45. that they might keep your statutes *
and observe your laws. Hallelujah!

Conclusion

Revelation 4 and 5

1. Glory and honour and power*
are yours by right, O Lord our God;

2. For you created all things*
and by your will they have their being.

3. Glory and honour and power*
are yours by right, O Lamb who was slain;

4. For by your blood you ransomed us for God,*
from every race and language, from every people and nation.

5. To make us a kingdom of priests*
to stand and serve before our God.

6. To God who sits on the throne and to the Lamb*
be praise and honour, glory and might, for ever and ever. Amen.

READING(S)

Luke 19.37-48

As he was now approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the deeds of power that they had seen, saying, ‘Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!’ Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, ‘Teacher, order your disciples to stop.’ He answered, ‘I tell you, if these were silent, the stones would shout out.’ As he came near and saw the city, he wept over it, saying, ‘If you, even you, had only recognized on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. Indeed, the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up ramparts around you and surround you, and hem you in on every side. They will crush you to the ground, you and your children within you, and they will not leave within you one stone upon another; because you did not recognize the time of your visitation from God.’ Then he entered the temple and began to drive out those who were selling things there; and he said, ‘It is written, “My house shall be a house of prayer”; but you have made it a den of robbers.’ Every day he was teaching in the temple. The chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people kept looking for a way to kill him; but they did not find anything they could do, for all the people were spellbound by what they heard.

Response Psalm 147.12

You delight, Lord, in those who fear you.
You delight, Lord, in those who fear you.
Who wait in hope for your mercy.
Those who fear you.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit
You delight, Lord, in those who fear you.

SONG OF MARY

Song of Mary Antiphon: Those that sow in tears* shall reap with songs of joy.

1 My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
*my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour;
2 for he has looked with favour on his lowly servant;*
from this day all generations will call me blessed.
3 The Almighty has done great things for me*
and holy is his name.
4 He has mercy on those who fear him*
in every generation.
5 He has shown the strength of his arm;*
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.
6 He has cast down the mighty from their thrones*
and has lifted up the lowly.
7 He has filled the hungry with good things,*
and the rich he has sent away empty.
8 He has come to the help of his servant Israel,*
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
9 the promise he made to our forebears,*
to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father... (may be said by all)

PRAYERS

Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Do not bring us to the time of trial,
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours,
now and for ever. Amen.

Collect of the Day

Lord God Almighty,
who filled your holy apostle Barnabas
with faith and the Holy Spirit,
and set him apart to proclaim your word to the nations:
grant us, like him, the same gifts;
that we may encourage the faint-hearted,
remember the poor,
and bring others to know you,
the living God;
for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, world without end.
Amen

Lord God almighty, come and dispel the darkness from our hearts, that in the radiance of your brightness we may know you, the only unfading light, glorious in all eternity.
Amen.

Let us bless the Lord:
Thanks be to God!

The God of hope fill us with all joy and peace in believing:
through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
