PSALMODY

Antiphon: The earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord As the waters cover the sea. (Isaiah 11.9)

Opening (from Isaiah 43.15,18-21)

I am the Lord, your Holy One,
the Creator of Israel, your King.
Do not remember the former things,
or consider the things of old.
I am about to do a new thing;
now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?
I will make a way in the wilderness
and rivers in the desert.
The wild animals will honour me,
the jackals and the ostriches;
For I give water in the wilderness,
rivers in the desert,
To give drink to my chosen people,
the people whom I formed for myself
So that they might declare my praise.

Glory to the Father

Psalm 51
1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your
loving-kindness;*
in your great compassion blot out my offences.

2 Wash me through and through from my wickedness*
and cleanse me from my sin.

3 For I know my transgressions,*
and my sin is ever before me.

4 Against you only have I sinned*
and done what is evil in your sight.

5 And so you are justified when you speak*
and upright in your judgement.

6 Indeed, I have been wicked from my birth,*
a sinner from my mother's womb.

7 For behold, you look for truth deep within me,*
and will make me understand wisdom secretly.

8 Purge me from my sin, and I shall be pure;*
wash me, and I shall be clean indeed.

9 Make me hear of joy and gladness,*
that the body you have broken may rejoice.

10 Hide your face from my sins*
and blot out all my iniquities.

11 Create in me a clean heart, O God,*
and renew a right spirit within me.

12 Cast me not away from your presence*
and take not your holy Spirit from me.

13 Give me the joy of your saving help again*
and sustain me with your bountiful Spirit.

14 I shall teach your ways to the wicked,*
and sinners shall return to you.

15 Deliver me from death, O God,*
and my tongue shall sing of your righteousness,
O God of my salvation.

16 Open my lips, O Lord,*
and my mouth shall proclaim your praise.

17 Had you desired it, I would have offered sacrifice,*
but you take no delight in burnt-offerings.

18 The sacrifice of God is a troubled spirit;*
a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

19 Be favourable and gracious to Zion,*
and rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.

20 Then you will be pleased with the appointed sacrifices,
with burnt-offerings and oblations;*
then shall they offer young bullocks upon your altar.

Glory to the Father…

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hidden. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord.

READING(S)

Matthew 8.1-17

When Jesus had come down from the mountain, great crowds followed him; and there was a leper who came to him and knelt before him, saying, "Lord, if you choose, you can make me clean." He stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, "I do choose. Be made clean!" Immediately his leprosy was cleansed. Then Jesus said to him, "See that you say nothing to anyone; but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them." When he entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, appealing to him and saying, "Lord, my servant is lying at home paralysed, in terrible distress." And he said to him, "I will come and cure him." The centurion answered, "Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only speak the word, and my servant will be healed. For I also am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, "Go", and he goes, and to another, "Come", and he comes, and to my slave, "Do this", and the slave does it." When Jesus heard him, he was amazed and said to those who followed him, "Truly I tell you, in no one in Israel have I found such faith. I tell you, many will come from east and west and will eat with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, while the heirs of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." And to the centurion Jesus said, "Go; let it be done for you according to your faith." And the servant was healed in that hour. When Jesus entered Peter"s house, he saw his mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever; he touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she got up and began to serve him. That evening they brought to him many who were possessed by demons; and he cast out the spirits with a word, and cured all who were sick. This was to fulfil what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah, "He took our infirmities and bore our diseases."

Response Psalm Psalm 104.24

O Lord, in wisdom you have made all that is the earth is full of your creatures.
All living things both small and great the earth is full of your creatures.
Glory to God, Source of all Being, Eternal Word and Holy Spirit.
O Lord, in wisdom you have made all that is, the earth is full of your creatures.

MAGNIFICAT

Magnificat Antiphon: I lift up my eyes to the hills, from where will my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. Psalm 121.1-2

1 My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
*my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour;
2 for he has looked with favour on his lowly servant;*
from this day all generations will call me blessed.
3 The Almighty has done great things for me*
and holy is his name.
4 He has mercy on those who fear him*
in every generation.
5 He has shown the strength of his arm;*
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.
6 He has cast down the mighty from their thrones*
and has lifted up the lowly.
7 He has filled the hungry with good things,*
and the rich he has sent away empty.
8 He has come to the help of his servant Israel,*
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
9 the promise he made to our forebears,*
to Abraham and his children for ever.

PRAYERS

Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Do not bring us to the time of trial,
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours,
now and for ever. Amen.
