PSALMODY

Antiphon: Hebrews 11:3 By faith we understand that the world was created by the word of God,

Opening (from Isaiah 45:18-24)

For thus says the Lord, who created the heavens
Who formed the earth and made it.
Who did not create it a chaos,
but formed it to be inhabited.
I am the Lord, and there is no other.
I did not speak in secret, in a land of darkness;
I the Lord speak the truth, I declare what is right.
Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth!
For I am God, and there is no other.
From my mouth has gone forth in righteousness, a word that shall not return:
'To me every knee shall bow,
every tongue shall swear.'

Glory to the Father

Psalm 51
1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your loving-kindness;*
in your great compassion blot out my offences.

2 Wash me through and through from my wickedness*
and cleanse me from my sin.

3 For I know my transgressions,*
and my sin is ever before me.

4 Against you only have I sinned*
and done what is evil in your sight.

5 And so you are justified when you speak*
and upright in your judgement.

6 Indeed, I have been wicked from my birth,*
a sinner from my mother's womb.

7 For behold, you look for truth deep within me,*
and will make me understand wisdom secretly.

8 Purge me from my sin, and I shall be pure;*
wash me, and I shall be clean indeed.

9 Make me hear of joy and gladness,*
that the body you have broken may rejoice.

10 Hide your face from my sins*
and blot out all my iniquities.

11 Create in me a clean heart, O God,*
and renew a right spirit within me.

12 Cast me not away from your presence*
and take not your holy Spirit from me.

13 Give me the joy of your saving help again*
and sustain me with your bountiful Spirit.

14 I shall teach your ways to the wicked,*
and sinners shall return to you.

15 Deliver me from death, O God,*
and my tongue shall sing of your righteousness,
O God of my salvation.

16 Open my lips, O Lord,*
and my mouth shall proclaim your praise.

17 Had you desired it, I would have offered sacrifice,*
but you take no delight in burnt-offerings.

18 The sacrifice of God is a troubled spirit;*
a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

19 Be favourable and gracious to Zion,*
and rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.

20 Then you will be pleased with the appointed sacrifices,
with burnt-offerings and oblations;*
then shall they offer young bullocks upon your altar.

READING(S)

John 11.30-44

Now Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him. The Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary get up quickly and go out. They followed her because they thought that she was going to the tomb to weep there. When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, 'Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.' When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. He said, 'Where have you laid him?' They said to him, 'Lord, come and see.' Jesus began to weep. So the Jews said, 'See how he loved him!' But some of them said, 'Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?' Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. Jesus said, 'Take away the stone.' Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, 'Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead for four days.' Jesus said to her, 'Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?' So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upwards and said, 'Father, I thank you for having heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me.' When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, 'Lazarus, come out!' The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, 'Unbind him, and let him go.'

Response Psalm Psalm 33:6

By the word of the Lord the heavens were made.
By God's breath the heavens were made.
Glory to God, Source of all Being, Eternal Word and Holy Spirit.
By the word of the Lord, the heavens were made.

MAGNIFICAT

Magnificat Antiphon: Send forth your Spirit O Lord And renew the face of the Earth. Psalm 104:1

1 My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
*my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour;
2 for he has looked with favour on his lowly servant;*
from this day all generations will call me blessed.
3 The Almighty has done great things for me*
and holy is his name.
4 He has mercy on those who fear him*
in every generation.
5 He has shown the strength of his arm;*
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.
6 He has cast down the mighty from their thrones*
and has lifted up the lowly.
7 He has filled the hungry with good things,*
and the rich he has sent away empty.
8 He has come to the help of his servant Israel,*
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
9 the promise he made to our forebears,*
to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father... (may be said by all)

PRAYERS

Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Do not bring us to the time of trial,
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours,
now and for ever. Amen.

Collect of the Day

God the Creator,
in Christ you call all people to the fullness of glory
for which you created us in your image: heal our hardened hearts,
renew our obedience to your will,
and conform our lives to your gracious design, through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Lord God almighty, come and dispel the darkness from our hearts, that in the radiance of your brightness we may know you, the only unfading light, glorious in all eternity.
Amen.

Let us bless the Lord:
Thanks be to God!

The God of hope fill us with all joy and peace in believing:
through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
