O God, make speed to save us;
O Lord, make haste to help us.

PSALMODY

Antiphon: Christ is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation All things have been created through Christ and for Christ.

Opening (from Genesis 1)

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth,
the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep.
God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light.
God said, ‘Let there be a dome in the midst of the waters,
and let it separate the waters from the waters.’ And it was so.
God said, ‘Let the waters under the sky be gathered together
into one place, and let the dry land appear.’ And it was so.
God said, ‘Let there be lights in the dome of the sky to separate the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years, and let them be lights in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth.’ And it was so.
God said, ‘Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures,
and let birds fly above the earth across the dome of the sky.’ And it was so.
God said, ‘Let the earth bring forth living creatures of every kind: cattle and creeping things and wild animals of the earth of every kind.’
And it was so.
God said, ‘Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness. And it was so, and God blessed them.
God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good.

Psalm 51
1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your loving-kindness;*
in your great compassion blot out my offences.

2 Wash me through and through from my wickedness*
and cleanse me from my sin.

3 For I know my transgressions,*
and my sin is ever before me.

4 Against you only have I sinned*
and done what is evil in your sight.

5 And so you are justified when you speak*
and upright in your judgement.

6 Indeed, I have been wicked from my birth,*
a sinner from my mother's womb.

7 For behold, you look for truth deep within me,*
and will make me understand wisdom secretly.

8 Purge me from my sin, and I shall be pure;*
wash me, and I shall be clean indeed.

9 Make me hear of joy and gladness,*
that the body you have broken may rejoice.

10 Hide your face from my sins*
and blot out all my iniquities.

11 Create in me a clean heart, O God,*
and renew a right spirit within me.

12 Cast me not away from your presence*
and take not your holy Spirit from me.

13 Give me the joy of your saving help again*
and sustain me with your bountiful Spirit.

14 I shall teach your ways to the wicked,*
and sinners shall return to you.

15 Deliver me from death, O God,*
and my tongue shall sing of your righteousness,
O God of my salvation.

16 Open my lips, O Lord,*
and my mouth shall proclaim your praise.

17 Had you desired it, I would have offered sacrifice,*
but you take no delight in burnt-offerings.

18 The sacrifice of God is a troubled spirit;*
a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

19 Be favourable and gracious to Zion,*
and rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.

20 Then you will be pleased with the appointed sacrifices,
with burnt-offerings and oblations;*
then shall they offer young bullocks upon your altar.

Glory to the Father…

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hidden. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord.

READING(S)

Mark 15.22-32

Then they brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means the place of a skull). And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh; but he did not take it. And they crucified him, and divided his clothes among them, casting lots to decide what each should take. It was nine o’clock in the morning when they crucified him. The inscription of the charge against him read, ‘The King of the Jews.’ And with him they crucified two bandits, one on his right and one on his left. Those who passed by derided him, shaking their heads and saying, ‘Aha! You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself, and come down from the cross!’ In the same way the chief priests, along with the scribes, were also mocking him among themselves and saying, ‘He saved others; he cannot save himself. Let the Messiah, the King of Israel, come down from the cross now, so that we may see and believe.’ Those who were crucified with him also taunted him.

Response Psalm John 1

Through God all things were made.
Through God all things were made.
What has come into being in God was life
All things were made.
Glory to God, Source of all Being, Eternal Word and Holy Spirit.
Through God all things were made.

MAGNIFICAT

1 My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
*my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour;

from this day all generations will call me blessed.
3 The Almighty has done great things for me*
and holy is his name.
4 He has mercy on those who fear him*
in every generation.
5 He has shown the strength of his arm;*
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.
6 He has cast down the mighty from their thrones*
and has lifted up the lowly.
7 He has filled the hungry with good things,*
and the rich he has sent away empty.
8 He has come to the help of his servant Israel,*
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
9 the promise he made to our forebears,*
to Abraham and his children for ever.

PRAYERS

Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Do not bring us to the time of trial,
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours,
now and for ever. Amen.

Collect of the Day

Almighty God,
who looked with favour on your servant Mary
and called her to be the mother of your Son:
grant us, we pray,
the humility which found favour in your sight;
that we, with her, may proclaim the greatness of your name,
and find the mercy shown to those who stand in awe of you;
through Jesus Christ, our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, world without end.

Lord God almighty, come and dispel the darkness from our hearts, that in the radiance of your brightness we may know you, the only unfading light, glorious in all eternity.
Amen.

Let us bless the Lord:
Thanks be to God!

The God of hope fill us with all joy and peace in believing:
through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
