Call to urgent action for Climate Justice

April 2, 2015

The Most Rev David Chillingworth, Bishop of St Andrews, Dunkeld & Dunblane and Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church was one of 17 Anglican Bishops from all six continents who attended a conference in South Africa in February on the issue of Climate Justice. A statement document The World is our Host : A Call to Urgent Action for Climate Justice was produced by the 17 Bishops.  Commenting on the Conference and the Statement, Bishop David says ” The experience of being part of a group of 17 bishops from all six continents discussing Climate Justice was transformative for me.  It is humbling to listen to the impact of climate change on the people of Fiji and on the indigenous people of the far north of Canada.  In such a dialogue, the Anglican Communion becomes a living reality as a world family of faith.

“My reading during and since the Conference has deepened my belief that these issues are real and urgent.  It has also helped me to understand that the way in which the world economic system is organised makes it difficult for the world community to make the kind of radical decisions which are necessary.

“I hope that this statement will stir a new interest and concern – and a movement to prayer – in the Anglican Communion and beyond. “
