National Theatre brings ‘Joey’ star of War Horse to Aberdeenshire

May 29, 2014

‘Joey’ the life size puppet which starred in the theatre production WarHorse is to visit Royal Deeside as part of an Open Family Day Event Sunday on 1 June, 2014. Joey will be joined by ‘Lincoln’ – one of the horses who featured in Steven Speilberg’s film War Horse.

Hundreds of people, and over 50 horses, are expected to attend event which will take place at Glen Tanar, near Aboyne, Aberdeenshire. The event is being organized by the Aberdeen Brooke Supporter’s Group in aid of The Brooke, a charity committed to working with families in the developing world who rely on their horse, donkey or pony as a principal source of income. The Brooke’s educational work extends from veterinary procedures, to good animal care and welfare as well as general farrier practice

A highlight of the event will be a short service near the site of an ancient wayside pulpit conducted by the Rt Rev Dr Bob Gillies, The Bishop of Aberdeen and Orkney, who will also give a blessing to all the animals present. Bishop Bob says “To work with the Brooke Trust for this marvellous event at Glentanar on June 1st has been a real privilege and the occasion promises to be really quite remarkable. It’s not often that I get to work with film stars, and to be able to do so with such internationally known characters like Joey and Lincoln will be a thrill and something I’m looking forward to immensely.”

Local followers of ‘Porridge’ the Donkey from Kincardine O’Neil will be delighted to see him at the event. There will be catering on site and sponsored horseback rides round Glen Tanar Estate. Dog walkers are also very welcome. You can find out more about Porridge, who is the Aberdeen Group’s star fundraiser, from his own Facebook page. http://www.facebook.com/absgporridge

‘Joey’ will make several appearances throughout the afternoon. The event is open to members of the public.
