Primus receives Honorary Degree of Doctor of Divinity

May 15, 2014

The Most Rev David Chillingworth, Bishop of St Andrews, Dunkeld and Dunblane and Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church has received an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Divinity from the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee. The University of the South is a major foundation of The Episcopal Church and the Honorary degree recognises the special historic and ongoing relationship between The Episcopal Church and the Scottish Episcopal Church. In further recognition of this relationship, The Rt Rev Dr Bob Gillies, Bishop of Aberdeen & Orkney,  was Bishop in Residence at the University of the South, Sewanee at the end of last year.

Speaking after the graduation ceremony Bishop David said:  “To receive an Honorary Degree from the University of the South is a great honour for me and for the Scottish Episcopal Church .  We share a common story and we are alike in many aspects of culture and polity.  I have gained much from my involvement with the church in the US – particularly the College of Bishops – and I look forward to future contact”
