O God, make speed to save us;
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;* as it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be for ever.

PSALMODY

Antiphon: Christ is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation All things have been created through Christ and for Christ.

Opening (from Genesis 1)

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth,
the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep.
God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light.
God said, ‘Let there be a dome in the midst of the waters,
and let it separate the waters from the waters.’ And it was so.
God said, ‘Let the waters under the sky be gathered together
into one place, and let the dry land appear.’ And it was so.
God said, ‘Let there be lights in the dome of the sky to separate the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years, and let them be lights in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth.’ And it was so.
God said, ‘Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures,
and let birds fly above the earth across the dome of the sky.’ And it was so.
God said, ‘Let the earth bring forth living creatures of every kind: cattle and creeping things and wild animals of the earth of every kind.’
And it was so.
God said, ‘Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness. And it was so, and God blessed them.
God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good.

Glory to the Father
or a suitable Hymn

Psalm 19
1 The heavens declare the glory of God,*
and the firmament shows his handiwork.

2 One day tells its tale to another,*
and one night imparts knowledge to another.

3 Although they have no words or language,*
and their voices are not heard,

4 Their sound has gone out into all lands,*
and their message to the ends of the world.

5 In the deep has he set a pavilion for the sun;*
it comes forth like a bridegroom out of his chamber;
it rejoices like a champion to run its course.

6 It goes forth from the uttermost edge of the heavens
and runs about to the end of it again;*
nothing is hidden from its burning heat.

7 The law of the Lord is perfect and revives the soul;*
the testimony of the Lord is sure and gives wisdom to the innocent.

8 The statutes of the Lord are just and rejoice the heart;*
the commandment of the Lord is clear and gives light to the eyes.

9 The fear of the Lord is clean and endures for ever;*
the judgements of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.

10 More to be desired are they than gold, more than much fine gold,*
sweeter far than honey, than honey in the comb.

11 By them also is your servant enlightened,*
and in keeping them there is great reward.

12 Who can tell how often he offends?*
cleanse me from my secret faults.

13 Above all, keep your servant from presumptuous sins;
let them not get dominion over me;*
then shall I be whole and sound,
and innocent of a great offence.

14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my
heart be acceptable in your sight,*
O Lord, my strength and my redeemer.

Glory to the Father…

Gracious creator of heaven and earth, your Word has come among us as the true Sun of righteousness, and the good news of his birth has gone out to the ends of the world. Open our eyes to the light of your law, that we may be purified from sin and serve you without reproach for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Light and our Life.

READING(S)

Mark 14.53-65

They took Jesus to the high priest; and all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes were assembled. Peter had followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest; and he was sitting with the guards, warming himself at the fire. Now the chief priests and the whole council were looking for testimony against Jesus to put him to death; but they found none. For many gave false testimony against him, and their testimony did not agree. Some stood up and gave false testimony against him, saying, ‘We heard him say, “I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.” ’ But even on this point their testimony did not agree. Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, ‘Have you no answer? What is it that they testify against you?’ But he was silent and did not answer. Again the high priest asked him, ‘Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?’ Jesus said, ‘I am; and “you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power”, and “coming with the clouds of heaven.” ’ Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, ‘Why do we still need witnesses? You have heard his blasphemy! What is your decision?’ All of them condemned him as deserving death. Some began to spit on him, to blindfold him, and to strike him, saying to him, ‘Prophesy!’ The guards also took him over and beat him.

Response Psalm John 1

Through God all things were made.
Through God all things were made.
What has come into being in God was life
All things were made.
Glory to God, Source of all Being, Eternal Word and Holy Spirit.
Through God all things were made.

MAGNIFICAT

Magnificat Antiphon: The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims God’s handiwork Psalm 19.1

1 My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
*my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour;
2 for he has looked with favour on his lowly servant;*
from this day all generations will call me blessed.
3 The Almighty has done great things for me*
and holy is his name.
4 He has mercy on those who fear him*
in every generation.
5 He has shown the strength of his arm;*
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.
6 He has cast down the mighty from their thrones*
and has lifted up the lowly.
7 He has filled the hungry with good things,*
and the rich he has sent away empty.
8 He has come to the help of his servant Israel,*
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
9 the promise he made to our forebears,*
to Abraham and his children for ever.

PRAYERS

Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Do not bring us to the time of trial,
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours,
now and for ever. Amen.

Collect of the Day

Creator of the world and fount of all life,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

Lord God almighty, come and dispel the darkness from our hearts, that in the radiance of your brightness we may know you, the only unfading light, glorious in all eternity.
Amen.

Let us bless the Lord:
Thanks be to God!

The God of hope fill us with all joy and peace in believing:
through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
